Looking for some advice for the new year…

I honestly don’t know what to do with the fact that I have ideas for comics, paintings, drawings, etc., but my artwork isn’t where I want it to be. Should I…

A. Practice drawing and save these concepts until I can produce them satisfactorily?

B. Just make art with the skills that I have and allow that I’ll get better as I go?

C. Concept stuff out, but keep practicing in the meantime, and make stabs at various pieces, but not actually produce anything until I feel ready?

D. Other?

My concern is that I’ll never feel ready.

Any thoughts you have would be super helpful.

  1. I don’t think it needs to be an either-or.

My opinion? Keep up some daily drawing practice, any media. Observational, but also other practice of ideas. This will benefit you the most. If you’re serious and have the time (you’re self employed, no?) , why not devote 2 or more hours a day to this? You may not be able to do this in every season, but it will be a very fruitful investment. and its fun, so its so worth it.

Drawing socially can be helpful for me, personally. Draw with friends, and if they’re not into drawing, maybe they like crafting or photo editting or something else productive. Art nights like this can be fun. I’d love to draw with you guys some time.

More ideas: don’t keep yourself away from doing conceptual stuff. I mean, that’s who you are, right? You enjoy the creative idea-driven parts of art and design. There’s no reason to stifle them until you develop other skills.

I think you do this already, but if you really want to improve your drawing, read about it. Read some Robert Beverly Hale lectures, read some drawing textbooks.

    But most. Draw. Draw. Draw.
