Let me tell you a little story:
Once upon a time, David squandered his youth playing video games. Then one day he put down the controller and never played again, except occasionally with friends, and he was very happy. The end.
But I will say that as the years have gone by and I’ve said “Ehhhh,” to game after game, there have been a few that I’ve thought I’d really like to try my hand at. I probably still won’t play them, but if you have time, inclination, and a gaming system, maybe you’d enjoy one or more of these.
Limbo
This simple platform game is executed in black and white, with lens-like effects, no dialogue, the simplest possible story, and a dreamlike feel. It’s a game stripped down to the barest essentials. I love the idea of this.
Shadow of the Colossus
This was a big hit years ago, and represents a complete rethinking of your classic sword-and-horse-quest kind of game. Instead of battling your way through levels for hours to get to bosses that you fight for a few minutes, in this game, isolated bosses the size of large buildings ARE the levels. You fight them exclusively, climbing up to attack their weak points, or using the terrain to your advantage. Sounds fascinating and, again, a very stripped-down concept. Love it.
Miegakure
I don’t even understand how this one works, which is why I want to play it. Apparently, it’s a simple push-pull-block kind of game, but the twist is this: you can move things into the fourth dimension. It’s supposed to be an exploration of what it would be like to experience a fourth dimension as a 3-dimensional being, like the square did in Flatland. When I read Flatland, I REALLY wanted to be able to do this, so playing this game (which has yet to be released) could be a really fun thought experiment. I anticipate it would also give me a massive headache.
StarCraft II
Let’s be honest, kids: StarCraft was just about the most perfect real-time strategy game you could ask for. Apparently, StarCraft II is a refining and improvement of that original play. Improving on perfection? Sign me up. I mean… just look at that screenshot. What’s not to love about terrain-sized units with mega-lasers?
I don’t really want to spend my life meaninglessly pounding through level after level of imaginary achievement… but if I were to try, these would be the games in which I’d do so.

i have played all these games, and they are all really good, i play Shadow of the colossus once a year. AND i talked to the creator of miegakure after playing it, and its nuts, and he is kinda nuts, but in a totally awesome way.
Sweet! I’m glad to know I have good imaginary taste in videogames. :) Miegakure isn’t publicly available to play, is it? Because that one I might give a shot once it’s out…
