I know I’m behind the times, but I just thought you all needed to know that Levitated Mass has officially opened at LACMA. This is has been a majorly controversial art piece, but I like it a lot. I’m definitely going to irritate my friends and loved ones by insisting we stop by to see it whenever we’re in LA.

why is it majorly controversial?
Mostly because it was extremely expensive and difficult to create, and people are crying out that it’s not art, it’s just a big, ugly rock set on a ledge. My understanding (which may or may not be correct) is that it was produced and purchased with private money, not taxes, so it’s not political — just outrage at what comes across as many to another “modern art scam.” The piece is a massive boulder carved out of a quarry and moved across LA to sit in the trench you see above… so many people are saying that, at best, it’s a feat of engineering, but it has nothing to do with art.
Got it. I figured as much, but I thought I’d ask in case it went deeper than that. :D
A masterpiece.
