I like M. Night Shyamalan. Well, I used to. I loved his original trilogy, and also The Village. Unfortunately, I hated Lady in the Water (just like the rest of the world) and didn’t even bother seeing The Happening (just like the rest of the world).
But I’m rooting for the guy! I think he has some amazing ideas. I was hoping that directing someone else’s material would let him shine in a way that his own works recently haven’t.
Unfortunately, with The Last Airbender getting a remarkably rotten 7% on the Tomatometer, this doesn’t seem to have been the triumphant return that I was hoping for. At all. If you ever wanted to see what it looks like when dozens of film critics load their shotguns with manure and fire both barrels, skim the reviews at Rotten Tomatoes.
Sorry, Night. I was in your corner. I really, really wanted you to succeed. I hope that someday, you knock our socks off… that is, if anyone ever lets you near a camera again.
