This Now

Sometimes I think about the fact that, subjectively, there really isn’t a “past” or “future.” I know things have happened, or will happen, but for us, as humans, we only exist and can make decisions in this one split, split, triple-split second. For one needle-width instant, we have free will — the past is locked in iron, completely untouchable, and the future is smoke and haze that we only think we can see and anticipate, when really we’re only guessing. This NOW is all we ever have, and so all we can choose to do is how to spend this Now. In this Now, I can worry or not. In this Now I can breathe or hold my breath, knock things off the table or go online or look at my daughter or close my eyes or stand up or sit down. In this Now I can worship or worry.

The future kind of doesn’t exist. You have this Now. In it, you can trust God, because this Now is exactly the bite-sized portion of existence that you can and should handle, delegated to you by a loving Creator. He’s given us this incredible, blinding authority to make real decisions in this Now only, and to leave the rest to him.

It’s something I think about when I feel out of control sometimes.
